Yoga Classes in Canggu for Beginners
You've arrived in Canggu. Maybe you rented a scooter, maybe you're still figuring out which side of the road everyone is driving on, maybe you've already eaten your body weight in acai bowls. And somewhere in the back of your mind, a thought: I should try a yoga class.
Good instinct. Let's talk about how to actually make that happen — especially if you're new to yoga, or new to Bali, or just a little uncertain about what you're walking into.
What to Expect from Yoga Classes in Canggu
Canggu has no shortage of yoga offerings. From sunrise flow classes to restorative evenings, from aerial yoga to the more traditional styles, you'll find it here. Yoga in Canggu has grown enormously over the past decade — and that's mostly a good thing, because it means there's something for every body and every intention.
For beginners, I always suggest starting with something a little more structured than a drop-in vinyasa class where everyone around you seems to be flowing effortlessly while you're quietly wondering if your downward dog is supposed to feel like this. (It's okay. It usually does at first.)
Why Mysore Ashtanga in Canggu is Actually Perfect for Beginners
Here's something that surprises most people: the Mysore Ashtanga method — which can sound intimidating — is actually one of the most beginner-friendly approaches to yoga there is.
In a Mysore class, you are not expected to keep up with anyone else. You are taught one pose at a time, at your own pace, with a teacher giving you direct personal guidance. There is no pressure to touch your toes on day one. There is no comparing yourself to the person on the mat next to you.
At Ubuntu Bali, we teach Ashtanga Mysore in Canggu this way because it's how we were taught — in Mysore, India, under Sharath Jois. It's a tradition of personal attention. You show up, you breathe, you learn slowly, and over time — over weeks and months — you realise something has shifted.
The Breath is Everything (Even on Day One)
In Ashtanga, we connect every movement to either an inhale or an exhale. This is not just a technique — it's a way of paying attention, of staying present, of turning a physical practice into something closer to active meditation.
As a beginner in a yoga class in Bali, this focus on breath is actually the most valuable thing you can take away. Even if you can't do half the poses. Even if you fall over. Even if you laugh at yourself (encouraged, actually). The breath keeps you anchored.
What Yoga Style Should a Beginner Choose in Canggu?
Honestly? Try a few. Canggu is a good place to experiment. But here's a loose guide:
• Mindful or slow flow — gentle, great for your first ever class
• Vinyasa — dynamic, fun, good if you like to move but can feel fast
• Mysore Ashtanga — traditional, personal, deeply effective — commit to at least 6 classes to feel the difference
• Yin — slow, meditative, very accessible
A Few Practical Notes for Your First Yoga Class in Bali
Come with an empty (or light) stomach — especially for a morning Mysore class. Water is fine. A full breakfast is not.
Wear something you can move in. You don't need special yoga clothes. Leggings and a singlet are fine. Shorts are fine. We're not a fashion show.
Tell the teacher it's your first time. Every good teacher wants to know this. It allows them to help you in a way that's actually useful rather than just adjusting your pose when you have no idea what the pose is supposed to be doing.
Be patient with yourself. Growth in yoga — and in life — happens slowly, in layers. We live in cycles. Everything shifts and changes in its own time. Even the rocks, though they might take longer.
